Montclair's holiday season doesn't revolve around one big downtown night. Most of it happens at Van Vleck House & Gardens on Van Vleck Street, at the Crane House on Orange Road, at the Montclair Art Museum on South Mountain Avenue and in the old waiting room at Lackawanna Station. The events in the smallest rooms book up weeks before December. One show is already sold out, one tour takes 15 guests, and public registration for Santa photos at Van Vleck opens at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5.
So it helps to plan the season by when each event opens for sign-ups. The dates below run in that order, starting with what's already scarce and ending with the December Saturdays when you can simply show up.
The Montclair Foundation's Cultural Arts Series is closing its fall season with "The Precipice," an original musical by Montclair's Miranda Ferriss Jones featuring Laura Benanti. It plays Dec. 1 and 2 at 7 p.m. at Van Vleck House & Gardens, 21 Van Vleck St. Tickets were $45 for members and $50 general admission, and the event page now lists it as sold out.
The other one to watch is the Montclair History Center's Holiday Candlelight Tour on Friday, Dec. 11, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Crane House & Historic YWCA, 110 Orange Road. Tickets are $25, or $20 for members. The tour is listed for ages 10 and up and is capped at 15 guests, so the whole evening seats fewer people than a single Saturday shift at the Flea. Tickets are sold through Humanitix, linked from the History Center's page.
Both events are small on purpose. Each is built around a historic house, and a historic house only holds so many people at once.
Santa at Van Vleck uses the same model at a larger scale. Families get timed visits with snacks, activities and holiday photos by New Moon Photography inside Van Vleck House. Visits run on three days:
The Foundation's event page lays out registration in this order:
Because of that order, members choose from the full calendar three days before anyone else, and payment comes before you see which slots are left. The page doesn't list a price. If a particular day matters to you, like the Friday afternoon or the Sunday, be at your screen when the link goes live.
A small technical note: the Foundation's 2026 event pages currently show a "This event has passed" label above the title. The dates printed underneath are this December's dates.
November has fewer caps but just as many dates. Most of them fall at the same two places, Van Vleck and the Montclair Art Museum.
Friday, Nov. 6: Art Uncorked at MAM. As Montclair Local reported, the museum's party returns with a VIP gallery preview from 5 to 6 p.m., the party from 6 to 9 p.m. and a silent auction that closes at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $125 for members, $150 for nonmembers, and $75 for Next Gen guests 35 and under and for veterans. The event is 21 and over, and MAM's event page notes that the ticket includes gallery admission.
That gallery admission includes "Nadia Myre: Analog/ues," which MAM describes as the artist's first expansive U.S. solo exhibition. It runs through Jan. 17, 2027, so it's there all season.
Saturday, Nov. 7: Art in Nature Day at Van Vleck. Outdoor art projects run from 10 a.m. to noon in the gardens, with Nov. 8 as the rain date. Members pay $20 per family or $10 per person, and the public pays $30 per family or $15 per person, per the Foundation's listing.
Nov. 12 to 15: the Holiday Boutique at Van Vleck House. Members get first access on Thursday, Nov. 12, starting at 5:30 p.m. Public hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13, and Saturday, Nov. 14, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15. The boutique page says local vendors and women-owned businesses will sell inside the decorated house, and this year's vendor roster is already full.
Saturday, Nov. 14, evening: "Feel the Power: Mendelssohn's Elijah." The Oratorio Society of New Jersey performs at Union Congregational Church, 176 Cooper Ave., at 7:30 p.m., with doors at 7. Montclair Local lists tickets at $30 in advance and $35 at the door, and $15 and $20 for students. Advance tickets save $5 each. A Saturday at the boutique can end at the concert.
Saturday, Nov. 21: Deck the Halls. The Montclair Foundation's yearly holiday fundraiser starts at 6:30 p.m. at the Montclair Art Museum. This year it honors Betty Jagoda Murphy and the Human Needs Food Pantry. The evening includes cocktails, dinner and a live auction, with tickets and tribute ads sold through the event page.
Put together, the two biggest fundraising nights of November happen in the same South Mountain Avenue building, 15 days apart, and Van Vleck has events on three of the month's four weekends.
The first weekend of December is the fullest of the season. Three separate events run on both days.
Santa is the only one of the three with a fixed time. A good plan is to book the Santa slot first and fit the Crane House and the Flea around it. The tour runs through midafternoon Sunday, and the Flea stays open until 5 p.m. both days.
After that first weekend, the calendar loosens up. Most of what's left needs no booking ahead.
The Montclair Flea Holiday Market starts Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 28 and 29, and returns to Lackawanna Station on Dec. 12 and 13 and Dec. 19 and 20, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. That makes four weekends in a row, eight market days in all.
The Montclair History Center holds its Winter Wonderland Open House on Saturdays, Dec. 12 and 19, from noon to 3 p.m. at 108 Orange Road. Admission is $5 per person, and children under 12 are free. That's the same price as the house tour, with two more chances to go.
Saturday mornings also shift in December. The Montclair Farmers' Market at 86 Walnut St. moves to winter hours of 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from December through May. Starting with the Dec. 5 market, the first stop on a Saturday can come an hour later.
On Dec. 12, you could shop the farmers market on Walnut Street, visit the Crane House open house on Orange Road and finish at the Flea at Lackawanna Station before it closes at 5 p.m. The capped event that weekend is the night before, at the Candlelight Tour, if you got one of the 15 tickets.
